Connecting from a Distance – LDI goes Virtual

While Northern Light Health leaders didn’t gather around the tables at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer for this fall’s Leadership Development Institute (LDI), the virtual format still provided them with the opportunity to come together, learn, discuss, and gain feedback on issues they may be having, and feel a sense of community—even if their counterparts were a couple of hundred miles away.

“With everything that’s happened in recent months and the fact that we had to cancel the March 2020 LDI at the last minute, we decided it was important to create a safe forum to bring our leaders together again as a touchpoint on the current state and where we’re headed. In the virtual forum, we were able to invite more leaders to participate than ever before. Participants were able to meet coworkers they’ve never encountered before in the breakout discussion and engage in real-time interaction through the chat function with comments and questions about the content presented,” shares Catharine MacLaren, vice president, Talent and Diversity, Northern Light Health.

The half-day event included informative presentations on a variety of topics. President and CEO Tim Dentry kicked the event off by sharing the 12 components of his vision centered around our brand, people, quality, accessibility, community, health, performance, efficiency, innovation, consumer-focus, behavior, and stability. He also emphasized Northern Light Health’s work towards equality and inclusion as well as celebrating our diversity. One attendee noted that Tim’s presentation stresses the importance of our people – “Our people matter the most, as it is our people who will fulfill our mission.” The event also included the following presentations:

  • Navneet Marwaha, MD, vice president and chief quality officer, Northern Light Health: “Quality  – A Continuous Journey.”
  • Jon Hutter, director of brand and marketing, and Joseph Siddiqui, vice president of Human Resources, Northern Light AR Gould, and Employee Experience: “Our Collective Strength – True North.”
  • Joseph Siddiqui, vice president of Human Resources, Northern Light AR Gould and Employee Experience, and Beth Grant, senior employee experience specialist: “Engaging Employees During Unexpected Times.”
  • Tony Filer, senior vice president and chief financial officer, Northern Light Health: “Current Financial Goals for FY21.”

All presentations can be found on the LDI page of Northern Light Health Talent Management portal.

Tim Talk Podcast Episode 11

In this episode of Tim Talk, Tim shares, “One huge lesson in healthcare we are learning all over again with this pandemic is that health, and the risks of poor health, start in the home and on the streets.” As we open a new chapter in our podcast series, we explore how we can better work with our community partners to deliver healthcare that is medically just. This week, we welcome Sgt. Wade Betters, the public information officer for the Bangor Police Department. Sgt. Betters discusses his perspective on social and racial justice and how we can all work together to create a safer, more accessible pathway for the homeless and other vulnerable populations to receive the healthcare that they need.
What’s to come: Look for a new Tim Talk podcast every two weeks, as we work together towards breaking down barriers, opening our hearts and minds to diversity, and focusing on issues of social and medical justice. On November 19, Melissa Skahan, vice president, Mission Integration, Northern Light Mercy Hospital, joins Tim to discuss religious diversity and tolerance.
